No-Waste Long Half Triangle Tutorial

I am making a king size quilt and needed a lot of long half triangle pieces for the quilt (That is what I am calling the pieces). More on the quilt later but I decided on the pattern Firework by Thimble Blossom. I love all of her patterns and fabric but this was our (hubby and mine) favorite. I already did a tutorial on No-Waste Flying Geese for the quilt.

But to make things a little easier I decided to make the long half triangle the same way as the flying geese, by using my No-Waste Long Half Triangle method.

I needed my finished long half triangle to be 2" x 4" (this is completely finished)

CUTTING & TRACING:

This will make #2 long half triangles

Choose two contrasting fabric for your long half triangles. Select which fabric will be your long triangle and which will be your side wing (little triangle).

For the long triangle cut a rectangle at 2 1/2" x 7".

For the side wings (little triangle) cut a rectangle at 2 1/2" x 3".

Now take the 2 1/2" x 3" (smaller rectangle) and trace a stitch line on the WRONG side of the fabric.

Place a ruler 3/8" from one corner and angle ruler to the other corner, making ruler edge go directly through corner. Then mark a line. Rotate your rectangle and mark a line 3/8" from the other line.

SEWING:

Place marked smaller rectangle (2 1/2" x 3"), 2" into the larger rectangle (2 1/2" x 7") with right sides together. You will be placing smaller rectangle in center of larger rectangle. 

Stitch directly on both marked lines.

Then cut right down the middle of the stitching lines.

Press toward the smaller triangles (the pattern I am using suggest pressing seams open).

You will have 2 long half triangle. Then trim the pieces before sewing together.
